Corning Inc., the American hardware company, unveiled its toughest glass screen for mobile devices yesterday. The new product is called the Gorilla Glass Victus, and according to Corning, it is twice as resistant to scratches as the incumbent, Gorilla Glass 6. Victus is also reportedly able to withstand falls of up to two metres, even if they land on rough surfaces like tarmac. Most existing glass screen shatter when drooped from a height of 08 metres.
Corning’s Gorilla Glass is used by over 45 smartphone manufacturers and does duty on more than eight billion devices. With phone displays quite costly to replace in case of accidental damage, durability has been one of the key concerns or consumers and the original equipment manufacturers who contract Corning for their specialty glass screens.

The company said that the Gorilla Glass Victus could be more than an incremental step up over its predecessor owing to its superior scratch and drop performance. “Dropped phones can result in broken phones, but as we developed better glasses, phones survived more drops but also showed more visible scratches, which can impact the usability of devices,” said John Bayne, a senior vice president and general manager at Corning.

“Instead of our historic approach of asking our technologists to focus on a single goal – making the glass better for either drop or scratch – we asked them to focus on improving both drop and scratch, and they delivered with Gorilla Glass Victus,” he added. Corning has a bevy of investors, including Apple. However, the first manufacturer to use Gorilla Glass Victus will be Samsung, in its upcoming Galaxy Note 20, which debuts on August 5.
