Why is Warren Buffett selling Apple shares?

Apple has a market capitalisation of USD3 trillion and sales worth USD383 billion. It is truly a global company with only 35% of its sales coming from the US market. Yet, Warren Buffett is selling shares of the company and taking a cash position. This has flummoxed the markets.


Buffett has always taken cash positions before every major market crash. Today, Berkshire’s cash pile has grown to USD189 billion – its highest ever. While everyone appreciates that “cash” is good in an expensive market, there are others who feel the Sage of Omaha is sensing trouble ahead.


A recent Sebi order had more bad news for the promoters and other top officials of the company, which was once darling of the stock market.


Investor reaction following previous Lok Sabha election results may give an idea of the possible direction, although the market will continue to be influenced by factors including central banks’ interest rate policies and geopolitical developments.
